Four days in Newport,
two hundred and fifty-three clips,
and what came out of them.

Vertical films for hotels, restaurants and tourism boards — shot, cut, graded and delivered by one person. Newport was shot unhosted and at my own expense, in August 2026, specifically so that a property could see what I do before being asked to pay for it.

Property film  ·  Auberge Collection

The Vanderbilt, Newport

A 1909 mansion built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, now an Auberge hotel on Mary Street. One evening, thirty-five clips: the green door, the conservatory with its striped awning and checkerboard floor, the dark portrait room, the terrace, tea service, food.

This is the piece to watch first if you run a property. It covers a building the way a marketing director needs it covered — arrival, public rooms, guest experience, food — rather than collecting pretty frames and hoping they add up.

Newport harbour and its masts seen from a shaded terrace FILM 02 26 clips72 sec
Stay film  ·  Harbourfront hotel

Newport Marriott

Seventy-two seconds on a hotel that sells its location rather than its rooms. Arrival, the lobby, the room, the atrium — and then the argument. Bowen's Wharf is six minutes on foot from the lobby door. At twenty to six one morning the whole of it was empty, and I was back in the lift by ten to seven having shot the wharf, the shoreline and the Point.

Shot unhosted across two nights in August. The spa, the breakfast service and the event spaces are not in it, because I paid for a room and filmed what a guest sees. That is the piece a property is buying: an outside eye that arrives, looks, and reports.

Marble House

Ninety seconds, fifty-three cuts, thirty-one clips. Alva Vanderbilt confined her daughter Consuelo to a room until she agreed to marry the Duke of Marlborough, threatened the man Consuelo actually wanted, and then feigned a fatal heart condition when the threat failed. The wedding was 6 November 1895. The duke received two and a half million dollars in railroad stock.

Thirty-one years later Alva testified at the annulment hearing and told the investigator, in her own words:

I forced my daughter to marry the Duke.

The same woman divorced her husband for infidelity in an era when women in her position did not, and spent the last decades of her life funding the campaign for the vote. A dollar bought you the suffrage lectures on the lawn in August 1909. Five got you inside the house.

Four days of shooting produces far more than four days of finished film. Everything below is graded, catalogued and available to cut against — which is how a monthly retainer stays affordable, because month two draws on a library rather than another flight. Newport is the worked example. Every destination gets the same treatment.

Stills

Two ratios, one hand

Two ratios only, 3:2 and 4:5, straightened and cropped by hand. A page where every image shares two ratios reads as edited before a word of it is read. Shot across four days in one town, which is what makes a set look like one trip rather than several.

Stained glass ceiling panel set into carved gilt plasterwork
Glass and gilt, set into the ceiling rather than hung from it
A canopy of coloured umbrellas strung above a brick lane in Newport
One strong visual will carry a twenty-second film on its own
A long parquet gallery under a painted ceiling, piano at the far end
The Preservation Society calls this the largest ballroom in Newport
The wrought-iron entrance gate of The Breakers against a hard blue sky
Wrought iron, and the first thing anyone sees of the property
A hydrangea head, blue fading to rose, against its leaves
Soil acidity decides whether a hydrangea comes up blue or pink
The Breakers seen square-on across its forecourt
Shot horizontal, which almost nothing else here is
The interior of the Chinese Tea House, timber roof and stained glass
The Preservation Society links its 1912 Chinese design to news that women in China had won the vote
A stone arch framing a statue and fountain on the lawn beyond
The arch does the framing, so the crop does not have to
A bronze putto astride a dolphin at the foot of a marble staircase
Bronze at the turn of a stair, where a hand would naturally fall
Rosecliff seen from its drive, white terracotta under summer trees
Rosecliff was paid for with a Comstock Lode silver fortune
Bowen's Wharf at dusk, string lights over the tables
Bowen's Wharf at the end of the day, when the lights come on
The Great Hall at The Breakers, chandelier and limestone arcade
The Great Hall rises forty-five feet
A gilt salon with chandeliers, silk curtains and painted ceiling
Gilt is the one warm thing the grade leaves warm
Breakfast laid on a terrace table with a white teapot and cup
Food and service photograph a hotel better than its lobby does
The Rail Explorers depot, a small blue and red clapboard building
Rail Explorers runs four sites in the United States, so one yes travels
Marble House behind hydrangeas, its portico columns in full sun
Reportedly eleven million dollars, seven of it marble
A figure walking a red-carpeted enfilade between gilt rooms
Scale is unreadable in an empty room, which is why someone is in this one
The Breakers, the loggia and its arcade seen along the seaward front

Method

Why the frames match

A portfolio is judged on consistency before it is judged on any single piece. Three things hold it together.

Colour

No filter and no house look. A property spends years deciding what colour its rooms are, and a film that recolours them is showing somebody else's building. Every frame here is the colour the camera recorded, corrected only where a shot sits wrong beside the one before it.

Capture

Shot 2160×3840 vertical where the frame allows it, 1080×1920 where speed matters more than resolution. Vertical is the delivery format, so it is also the capture format. Nothing is cropped down from landscape after the fact.

Delivery

Delivered as a clean master with no burned-in text, so an in-house team can add captions in their own style, in any language, without coming back to the edit. The cut list and the graded source clips are kept, so a re-cut six months later starts from the assembly rather than from scratch.

Two ways to work

For hotels, restaurants & experiences

Cover the property, not the trip

A single intensive shoot day at a property yields sixty to eighty usable clips. That is enough to carry a month of posting, which is why the first shoot is priced as production and everything after it is priced as a retainer.

Hosted stays are welcome and are quoted as trade against the production fee rather than in place of a contract, so both sides know what is owed.

  • Signature PropertyFull day · full coverage
  • Half DayFocused, single-area
  • ExperienceOne activity, end to end
  • Single VideoOne film, one round of notes
  • Monthly retainer6–16 films · 15–40 stills
On usage rights Every proposal is quoted two ways: organic social only, or with paid-media rights included. The shoot day is identical. Deciding this before the shoot rather than after it is what keeps a media buy from turning into a renegotiation.
For tourism boards & destination marketing

Every claim sits on a rung

Destination copy repeats itself until nobody remembers where a figure came from. The Marble House film does not say the staff numbered thirty-six because a guidebook says so — it says it because the placard in the servants’ wing lists twenty-three indoors and thirteen outside, and that placard is on screen while the line is spoken.

Every factual claim in a script is graded before it is recorded, and a board receives the sourcing along with the film.

RungWhat it coversHow it is written
01Dates, architects, designations traceable to an archive or preservation bodyStated flat, no hedging
02Figures an institution reports about itselfAttributed inside the sentence
03Legend, apocrypha, claims the contemporary record contradictsKept, and marked as story
Why keep rung three at all Because the correction is almost always more entertaining than the legend, and a board that publishes the correction becomes the source everyone else quotes.

Where I'll be

Booking windows, 2026–27

Production is scheduled around a fixed travel calendar. A property inside one of these windows pays for a shoot day rather than a shoot day plus airfare.
